Bayerische Motoren Werke started as an aircraft engine manufacturer; this heritage is reflected in the "roundel" badge which was designed to resemble the spinning propeller of a plane. While they produced a few cars before WWII, BMW came into its own as an automaker when they licensed the design for the bizarre Isetta city car in an attempt to save the company from bankruptcy. Its success led to the 1500, which in turn evolved to become the legendary 2002. This car singlehandedly created the sports sedan market, leading the company to create a full lineup of cars built for enthusiasts from the 1-Series coupe to the X5 crossover.
